The old man remembers everything – from the beginning of his appearance on earth as Donal on the small island of Scarrap in the Orkneys right through until his final incarnation as Papa Roach on the island of Barbados.

His lives are set out as interwoven tales, the purpose of which is to exhibit one eternal life, carved into many incarnations where the aim is for the soul to learn the many lessons required in order to progress.

The old man relates these stories of his lives to great-grandsons Thomas and George and the reader learns that the younger boy, George, has inherited his great-grandfather’s remarkable memory.
